Final construction phase
After a short construction break, we were able to resume work in mid-December. During the winter holidays, we had the opportunity to speed things up a bit. Our goal was to complete at least one building with two classrooms before the start of the school year, so the new students could move into the new building right away. Unfortunately, we were unable to achieve this for various reasons. Despite the delay, we wanted to stick to our construction plan. This proved to be somewhat difficult as we had once again exceeded the budget. Good friends from Switzerland surprised us with a generous donation of CHF 500 at Christmas. With this, we were able to initiate the final phase of construction. The focus was now on completing the walls and the roof.

Here is an overview of our expenses:
expenditure | Expenses |
---|---|
1x truck ballast | CHF 95.- |
1x small truck sand | CHF 75.- |
25x cement | CHF 190.- |
Iron sheets 64x3m 64x2m | CHF 544.- CHF 384.- |
Beam | CHF 1’917.- |
Nails | CHF 90 |
Work | CHF 350.- |
Total | CHF 3’500.- |
However, we were still short of CHF 300 for the roof construction, so we launched a fundraising appeal. In Kenya, payments are typically made in advance, which means that without money, no work can be done. Within a very short time, we raised the amount needed and were able to give the money to the contractor. I would like to extend a big thank you once again to the donors.
We have now been able to complete a large part of the work. The most important thing was to have a stable framework so that we wouldn’t face any issues with the roof later on. The roof structure is made of wood and will be covered with iron sheets. This hopefully ensures that the building remains stable in the long term and that the school stays dry during the rainy season.
In the pictures, you can follow the progress of the work. We had a total of six workers involved in the roof construction. It was also very important to us not to cut corners on the roof and to select the best possible materials. After all, we want it to last as many years as possible.
In Kenya, we receive a lot of support from family, friends, acquaintances, and people from our community. A friend lent us his small truck so that we could transport the materials for the roof.

The costs for the roof:
Material | Expenses |
---|---|
16x Iron sheets | CHF 120.- |
Beam | CHF 100.- |
Nails | CHF 20.- |
Work | CHF 60.- |
Total | CHF 300.- |
